2. Signs a Church Is Spiritually Dry (And What to Do About It)

Spiritual dryness rarely happens overnight. It is more like a slow leak in a tire—you don’t notice it until the ride becomes bumpy and difficult. For many pastors, the realization that the church is "dry" comes with a heavy heart and a sense of frustration.

Recognizing the Symptoms How do you know when a church has moved from a place of vitality to a place of spiritual drought?

  1. Routine Without Rejoicing: The services are orderly, and the points are made, but there is a lack of genuine joy in the singing and the fellowship.

  2. Prayer Life Has Waned: The prayer meeting has become a list of physical ailments rather than a desperate cry for God’s presence.

  3. Lack of Burden for the Lost: When soul-winning and evangelism become "programs" rather than a natural overflow of the heart, dryness has set in.

The Way Back to the Water In Jeremiah 2:13, the Lord speaks of those who have “forsaken me the fountain of living waters.” The remedy for dryness is always a return to the Source. This starts in the pulpit and moves to the pew. It requires an honest admission of our need and a willingness to set aside church-as-usual to seek His face.

Sometimes, a fresh voice—an evangelist who carries a burden for the local church—can be the tool the Lord uses to break up the fallow ground.

If you recognize these signs in your own ministry, know that you are not alone. Refined By Grace Ministries is dedicated to helping churches navigate these seasons. Let’s seek the Lord together for a season of refreshing.
